Identify the conjugate acid-base pairs in the following reaction.
When the reaction proceeds in the forward direction, hydrochloric acid donates a proton. HCl is therefore a Bronsted acid. After HCl has donated a proton, a chloride ion remains. The chloride ion is therefore the conjugate base. If the reaction were to run in the reverse direction, the chloride ion would be a Bronsted base and HCl would be the conjugate acid.
